The Power Platform Environment Strategy Most Organisations Actually Need

A practical environment model separates personal productivity, team experimentation and lifecycle-managed production.

Environment strategies often become diagrams with dozens of theoretically pure zones that nobody can explain six months later. The useful model is simpler.

Keep the default environment for constrained personal productivity. Give makers accessible development spaces. Provide dedicated development, test and production environments for supported solutions, separated by security groups and deployed through pipelines. Add specialist environments only for genuine boundaries such as geography, business isolation or regulated data.

Define naming, capacity ownership, DLP and lifecycle for each pattern. Automate creation and expiry where possible. Avoid one production environment per department by default; environment boundaries should reflect security, operations and deployment rather than the organisation chart.

The best strategy is one teams can understand and consistently use. Every additional environment pattern should enforce a real boundary; otherwise the strategy itself becomes another source of sprawl.
